Discover Family Friendly Locations Around The World, On The Only Global Travel App Designed For Parents

Family glamping with kids inside a safari tent

We have seen the trend on social media… Big safari-style tents, cabins, cottages, great outdoors, and resorts filled with amenities. Glamping is HOT! We often see singles or young couples discovering the latest glamping spots. At GoWhee, we sent one of our own, to check things out and keep it real. Our founder tried out family glamping with kids for the first time, here are her thoughts…

Preface: “As a traveling mom who is used to staying at hotels and the occasional RV campsite, I was eager to try out this glamping thing with children! I had experienced traditional tent camping before and honestly, with kids, it is not for me. So I went into this experience with the hope that a luxury camping setup could be a great compromise. Here is how it went…” – Maud, CEO and founder of GoWhee App.

Best part, places are selected by parents like you!

What is the difference between Glamping, Camping, and a hotel?

Whether your summer vacation is in a luxury glamping resort in Northern California, whether you decide to rough it up in a national park glamping site, or get an all-inclusive resort experience near a river in Canada, all glamping resorts have one thing in common: large canvas tents and amenities a bit more elaborate than your traditional campground.

What is Glamping? Glamping is the concept of an outdoor sleeping experience provided with the necessities like a hotel would (i.e. safari tents, beds, and often linens) while keeping the connection to nature intact just like traditional campsites offer.

What makes a great glamping experience? Try to stay at a resort that focuses on the wilderness while allowing your family to relax away from the daily chores, and enjoy outdoor activities together to reconnect.

“When I travel with my son, my only choices are hotels/vacation rentals, which usually means closer to a city, big infrastructure, less of a natural environment, and privacy. Or, we are staying at a campsite, which usually means much more work for us (the parent), between, the food, the set up and the activities… Not to mention having to choose between the uncomfortable tent setup, or pulling our camper/RV for comfort.  It can become quite an ordeal! Glamping spots like REO in British Colombia, Canada, offer a great balance for families, wanting to reconnect with their kids, with nature, and with themselves, while keeping the chores at bay and staying comfortable.” – shares, Maud Maciak GoWhee Founder.

Is Glamping good for kids?

Although it is not always advertised as a family-friendly accommodation, glamping can be super fun with children. The caveat is to choose a resort with kids’ amenities and make sure you understand the way things are set up before your arrival so you can come prepared.

Maud recommends looking primarily for what the glamping site offers remembering her experience, “Glamping without REO’s playground, kids club, board games available, and other fun activities they had on site to keep kids busy, would have not been the same! If feeling relaxed is your main goal during your family glamping trip, then make sure kids are part of the glamping resort’s program from the get-go”.

Understanding the different age-appropriate safety measures is also important. Not all glamping sites are created equal to accommodate infants, toddlers, and older children.

“The environment around the tents and the structures themselves will change the way you enjoy your glamping experience. Even luxury glamping resorts are bound to nature limitations, animals and rivers for instance, so if it is your first time going glamping with kids, make sure you understand the resort’s limitations and adjust accordingly with your kid’s ages” warns Maud.

Ask about meals, snacks, and everything else that is included. There are never too many questions. Each glamping experience is set differently. Glamping is a term that has not been streamlined as much as “hotels” or “resorts”, so different campgrounds will put different things under the word “glamping”.

Maud shares that “Places like REO glamping resort, offer packages where meals and activities are included. This is great, but looking back I wish I asked about the time and quantity of the meal options and although the site did an amazing job with my dietary restrictions, I should have come prepared for kids’ special requests and their insatiable need for snacks”.

Double-check, the accessibility of the campground, tents, cabins, cottages, and activities for your special needs kiddos.

“Don’t assume that glamping is not accessible by nature, since many locations are offering accommodations to be ADA accessible or offer sensory experience for children with SPD. But I suggest you mention it ahead of time to the staff so they are aware of your need and double-check things. Contrary to hotels, glamping is dependent on natural terrains and resources, so things may be changed from one year to the next.”

What should I pack for a family glamping vacation?

  • Snacks
  • Power bank
  • Camping style toiletry
  • Blackout for packNplay or an eye mask if your kids are sensitive to light.
  • Earplugs
  • Easy on and off shoes
  • Warm clothes at night and Cool and comfortable clothes for the day

What is the minimum age for a rafting experience?

Places like REO offer great rafting and glamping combo experiences. Kids aged 4 years and older you can experience their river float and older kids can try out rafting in rapids based on the river’s intensity. You can check their schedule for the river level and age recommendations here.

Pros and cons of a family-friendly glamping trip.

Positive points about glamping versus camping or hotels.

Nature and hiking trails are right at your doorstep. Typically those camps are located near a park, on a ranch, near a lake, or close to beaches. At the very least you will be far from the city center and you will have easy access to hiking trails. “REO even had a private beach onsite, that was such a treat for the kids and the adults!” – Maud.

No screens! This kind of family travel is really about hiking, outdoor adventures, and reconnecting as a family. Kids will have enough sensory input to keep the screens at bay for a weekend. We recommend bringing board games and stories to share for the evenings around a campfire. Maud says, “There is nothing better than cozy up in the tent after a day of adventure and get competitive, REO even provided the board games… yeay for less packing!”.

No chores. Family vacations always come with a level of chores and organization. But places like REO rafting resort know how to put parents at ease with an all-inclusive setup. No dishes, no cleaning, no need to unpack tents, and no cooking. “We didn’t even need to choose what to order, that was surprisingly freeing!” remembers Maud.

It will be a new and exciting family experience! If like REO, your campgrounds offer tons of cool activities, it is perfect to check off some bucket list items. You can try new things like archery, and rafting, swim in glacier water, and take an outdoor shower!

Perfect for multigenerational travel or families with a different wish list. Maud explains, “I traveled to REO with a friend and her two children, we have a very different wish list, she is more outdoorsy so naturally she gravitated towards water sports and other outdoor adventures. I, on the other hand, preferred the spa and relaxing in the hammocks with a good book! The bottom line is, the campground had something for everyone”.

Going to sleep early and with the sound of water, waking up with birds singing, the fresh air… All of these are setting your kids up for amazing sleeping patterns. Camping does offer that too, but glamping will also have those luxury tents and comfortable beds!

Why glamping may not be a good fit for your family?

No connection: If you need to check on email or plan to work remotely during your vacation. Computers and cell phones will probably be out of order for a few days at a glamping site. So in that way, hotels are more flexible.

Difficult Access: Glamping resorts like REO which are a destination type resort, are not meant for you to leave, they are meant for you to spend a few days onsite and enjoy their activities. They give you shuttles to go to activities that are not within walking distance and the rest is usually onsite, so come prepared and don’t plan on driving out. Also, make sure you inquire about access and the kind of vehicle you need. “REO was remote and beautiful, but I wouldn’t go there with a Tesla! Come with a vehicle that can handle dirt roads and steep hills,” says Maud.

Traditional resort amenities might be missing: “if you are looking for a place with a bar, on-demand movies on giant TVs, and a luxurious spa… places like REO which focuses on health and connection to nature, will be missing the marks. Just make sure you set your family expectations properly so everyone has fun.” mentioned Maud.

Conclusion: Would I do it again?

Now that I have experienced it, I am hooked! I will come back to glamping with kids again, but this time with a different mindset and better prepared. For instance, I was so afraid to be bored in the middle of nowhere… but I found myself longing for less to do and more empty/quiet space during our days.” says Maud.

The traveling mom recommends planning for a more relaxed schedule like booking an extra night (compared to a campsite or a hotel) so you can space out the physical activities (i.e.: rafting or yoga for REO’s glamping resort).  It also helps to communicate with kids about the kind of schedule they will be experiencing during a glamping vacation ahead of time.

“This experience is not for everyone (you have to be ready to let go of all preconceptions!), but families should look at glamping spots like REO as an alternative to other types of vacation. “It is a unique experience, it allowed me to create bonds with my son, that will last a lifetime, and I did come out of it refreshed! It felt like a true vacation!” concludes Maud.

Discover Family Friendly Locations Around The World, On The Only Global Travel App Designed For Parents

When planning a trip with kids, parents have to juggle many things. From creating the perfect itinerary to making sure to stay on budget, to finding a hotel or vacation home that can host everybody’s needs.

No wonder that we often get overwhelmed and don’t even look into travel insurance.  Most of us rely on credit card travel insurance plans or automatically think that our medical insurance coverage will take care of all family members during the trip.

Myths of Credit Cards and Traditional Travel Insurance Policies

To make it “easy”, many credit cards offer a travel insurance option. Although this offers some coverage, it often doesn’t cover all aspects of the trip or even the most important ones. This type of policy coverage is often quite limited, so make sure to read all the fine print in your travel insurance policy.

Here are the real costs of relying solely on travel insurance plans included with many credit card policies.

  • You may have to pay extra for refundable rates. With refundable rates averaging 4 times more than regular rates, and some travel insurance plans not including trip cancellations in their coverage, this could mean that your family is still paying extra for refundable tickets.
  • Traditional travel insurance companies may not cover the loss and breakage of your belongings during the trip. Make sure you check the fine print and that your stroller and car seat are within the benefits of the plan.
  • According to our community of parents, the number one concern during family travel is being covered if a medical incident occurs. Kids can get hurt and someone always seems to get sick when we travel as a family. So make sure the whole family is covered by your family travel insurance or medical insurance, including during international travel.

For peace of mind, when planning your next family trip, we recommend contracting a temporary family travel insurance coverage to take care of all the items above. GoWhee partnered with Faye, a modern travel insurance company, with app-based digital whole-trip insurance, that understands that parents are busy and that we don’t have time to spend hours looking through hundreds of lines of coverage to see if our baby gear will be covered.

Faye provides more than a traditional insurance policy; their interactive app provides a concierge-like service, from weather updates to flight cancellation assistance and alerts. We particularly love their “person-first” policy, with real people we can talk to 24/7 via their app, phone, or email if something arises.

To get to know this fabulous brand in the travel insurance space, we asked their team some important questions to consider when traveling with kids.

How is Faye different from my Credit Card coverage?

No matter what travel insurance plan you choose, whether it be just credit card coverage or taking out a travel insurance policy separately, you should make sure you know what you’re getting.

Is emergency medical covered? And how about lost bags, flight delays, or missed connections?

You need to understand what travel coverage your credit card offers – yes we mean the fine print – and being able to compare that to the travel insurance policy you might be considering is crucial.

Not all credit cards or travel insurance providers are created equal. For example, if you or a family member have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s super important to know if you’re covered when away from home.

Emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation are two things that are rarely covered by credit card plans. Some do cover inconveniences like lost baggage or roadside assistance, but it’s secondary coverage meaning if the airlines will cover it they’re off the hook.

Faye can cover your trip, your health, and stuff, and offers 24/7 customer support – which you likely won’t get with your credit card travel coverage option. You can add supplementary coverage for things like vacation rental protection, adventure sports coverage, car rental care, and pet care and cancel for any reason if you need it.

What does a family travel insurance policy look like with Faye?

Faye provides whole-trip travel coverage and care that brings out the best in each journey with industry-leading technology that enables smarter, faster assistance and claims resolutions.

Their robust travel insurance can cover your health, your trip, and your stuff, for domestic and international trips – including cruises.

With the Faye app available after enrollment, you’ll get access to global assistance with their customer experience team 24/7 (real humans!), real-time travel alerts, an easy-to-file claims process, and quick reimbursements.

How does it work if I initiate a trip cancellation?  Does your travel insurance plan cover non-refundable rates?

Yes. If your plan includes trip cancellation coverage and you need to cancel your trip for covered reasons, including if you get sick, contract COVID-19, or a travel provider goes bankrupt, Faye can cover up to 100% of non-refundable trip costs like flights, hotel bookings, tickets & activities, and quarantine accommodation, up to your total estimated trip cost.

Does Faye cover medical emergencies during my family vacation?

Faye can cover emergency medical expenses on both international and domestic trips.

Important things to know about Kids Travel Suitcase or Backpack

Traveling with kids can be quite a challenge on its own. From having to lug around extra luggage to dealing with temper tantrums. But it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. One way to make the journey more enjoyable for everyone is by investing in the right type of kids travel suitcase or and kids travel backpack, so they can carry their own things independently and happily.

Companies like Backpacks Global, offers a wide range of kid-friendly luggage and backpacks, perfect for both long and short journeys.

Luggage Size Matters

Selecting the perfect size of backpack or suitcase for your kids is one of the most important decisions you can make when investing in gear for your family trip. The size of the bag will determine the amount of luggage your child can bring, and it can also make the difference between an enjoyable and convenient trip and one that is difficult and uncomfortable.

The kids travel backpacks should be large enough to hold all of the essentials. We recommend packing 1 day’s worth of change and items they need for their trip (i.e toys, snacks, electronics), but not too large or cumbersome that it becomes difficult for them to carry.

The size of the kids travel suitcases you select should also be able to meet the required carry-on bag size for most airlines. As the maximum size to fit the bag in the overhead bins can vary by airline, it’s best to check with the airline prior to purchase. Most airlines will allow a carry-on bag that is no more than 22” high, 14” wide, and 9” deep. With some international airlines allowing down to 17” high.

Paying attention to the size of the bag you select is important, as many airlines will charge extra for oversized bags.

Choose luggage sets for durability, not budget

When it comes to buying gear for your kids travel suitcases, durability should be a top priority. Kids are hard on their possessions, and gear such as backpacks and suitcases can take a lot of wear and tear over time. That’s why it’s important to invest in quality materials and construction when shopping for backpacks and suitcases for your kids.

One of the best ways to ensure that your kids’ gear is built to last is to look for backpacks and suitcases with reinforced corners and zippers. Reinforced corners are important because they provide extra protection from wear and tear. Reinforced zippers are also important because they are much less likely to break than regular zippers.

In addition to reinforced corners and zippers, it’s also important to look for backpacks and suitcases with high-quality materials and construction. Quality materials and construction will ensure that your kids’ gear can withstand the wear and tear that comes with everyday use. Additionally, high-quality materials and construction will ensure that your kids’ gear looks as good as new for years to come.

Added bonus, look for a backpack or suitcase that comes with a warranty. A warranty ensures that if any defects occur, the manufacturer will make repairs or replacements. This will provide peace of mind and ensure that your child is using a backpack or suitcase that is built to last.

Weigh-in

We are all familiar with the dreaded weigh-in at the airport and the potential rearrangement of clothes and toys amongst the different bags, that follow.

When choosing a kids travel suitcase and kids travel backpack, target light travel sets since the empty weight could impact your travel journey in the long run. As a general guideline, it’s generally recommended to choose a suitcase that weighs no more than 10-12 pounds (4.5-5.5 kg) when it is empty.

Letting your kids pull or carry their suitcase or backpack, is a great way to promote independence and teach responsibility.

So how heavy is too heavy? Generally speaking, the total weight of a backpack or suitcase should not exceed 10% of your child’s body weight. For example, if your child weighs 60 pounds, their backpack or suitcase should not weigh more than 6 pounds.

When it comes to suitcases, there’s a bit more flexibility in terms of weight, as they can typically support more weight. Nonetheless, it’s still important to consider the weight, especially if your child will be dragging it around for long periods of time. A good rule of thumb is to look for a suitcase that is no more than 20-25% of your child’s body weight.  Make sure that the total weight is comfortable to handle stairs and overall maneuvers (i.e going in and our of the car, train etc…) when choosing and packing a rolling suitcase.

It’s all about the pockets

Functionality: Consider the features of your kids travel backpacks or kids travel suitcases. Does it have multiple compartments for organization? Does it have a place for a water bottle or snacks? Is it expandable for those times when your child needs a little extra space?

One of the best features of high-quality travel bags or kids travel suitcases is their functionality. Make sure to look for the ability to keep the contents safe and secure. Does it have multiple compartments for organization? Being able to separate items such as clothes, toys, books, and snacks can make packing and unpacking a breeze.

Look for bags with multiple pockets, secure closures, and waterproof materials. This will help to keep your child’s belongings dry and secure, no matter how hard they play.

Additionally, consider if the bag has zipper pockets on the exterior. Having a few pockets on the outside can provide easy access to items such as water bottles or snacks.

Another important feature to consider is its expand-ability. Is the bag expandable for those times when your child needs a little extra space? This can be beneficial on long trips where your child may require a few extra items. Being able to expand the bag can also help with packing multiple items in the bag without having to stuff everything in.

Travel with kids, easily and comfortably!

Comfort is essential

The last thing you want when traveling with kids is to worry about your child’s comfort as you are pulling luggage across the airport.

A kids travel backpack or kids travel suitcase that’s uncomfortable to use can lead to pain and even long-term physical damage. To ensure your child’s safety, comfort and convenience, here are a few features to look out for.

First, pay attention to the shoulder straps. Padded straps can be a lifesaver for your child’s shoulders and back. Look for straps that are wide enough for comfort, and make sure they are adjustable to fit different body sizes. The same goes for backpacks; look for a padded back panel to provide extra cushioning and support.

Second, look for smooth-rolling wheels on a kids travel suitcase. A bag that’s too heavy to carry can be difficult to pull. With smooth-rolling wheels, your child will be able to pull the suitcase with ease. Not only that, but it will also reduce the amount of strain on their back, neck, and shoulders.

Finally, look for additional features that can make carrying a bag easier such as a chest strap, waist belt, or telescoping handle. These features will help distribute the weight of the bag across your child’s body, making it more comfortable to carry.

Make it a fun and stylish travel set

Finally, consider your child’s personal style. There are many fun and colorful options available, so you can choose a backpack or suitcase that your child will love and be proud to carry.

First, think about what your child’s favorite colors are and what kind of patterns or designs they’re into. If your child likes vibrant colors, then you can look for a backpack or suitcase with a bright and cheerful design.

Older kids might prefer something more mature and stylish. Look for backpacks and suitcases with special features like a laptop sleeve, pockets for organizing items, and a padded back panel for comfort. You can also go for something more classic and timeless like a leather backpack or suitcase.

To find the latest trend, we recommend taking a look at TikTok and Instagram with major influencers showing the latest style, chances are your child will be in the know.

How To Find The Best Playground Near Me? – A Guide for Parents

[post:_secondary_title]

If you have ever been on the hunt for a great playground for your kids, you know the struggle of finding the right one. It can be time-consuming and stressful if you don’t know where to look.

Fortunately, there are options to make the process easier and faster. From parent groups to travel apps, there are plenty of ways to find the best playgrounds near you.

How To Find The Best Playground Near Me? – A Guide for Parents

What Makes A Great Playground

If you’ve ever been to a playground and looked around, you know how much fun they can be. After all, it’s a place where kids can run around, play with friends, and enjoy some fresh air. But what makes a great playground? One that offers unique features, up-to-date playground equipment, kid-friendly themes, lots of natural elements, and other features to make the playground even more enjoyable.

Unique Features

A great playground isn’t just about the slides, tire swings, zip lines, and other traditional playground equipment. It should also have unique features that kids can’t get enough of. Popular features like a splash pad or climbing structures can make a playground stand out from the rest. The splash pad is great for hot summer days; kids can cool off and have some water fun at the same time!

Newer Playground Equipment

To keep kids safe and engage we recommend looking for playgrounds with newer equipment. Like fully enclosed play areas or structures that offer different types of physical challenges. Being up to date with the latest playground trends will help ensure kids stay excited to come and play.

Themed Playgrounds

Themed playgrounds is a great way to create an exciting afternoon for kids. You can make it a day with a themed restaurants or show instead of going to a theme park. Instead of traditional playgrounds, look for ones with a grand pirate ship, castles, or even fairy-inspired themes. It can also help teach kids about different environments and cultures.

Natural Elements

One of the best things about a great playground is the natural elements that it provides. Look for playgrounds that are grassy or have lots of trees and greenery. You can also try to find playgrounds with walking trails around to allow kids to explore a little further and initiate them to hiking. Breathing in the fresh air and exploring the natural elements can help them relax after all their running around.

Playgrounds for all ages

When searching for playgrounds to accommodate kids of different ages you will need to find ones with baby swings and lower structures, as well as things to entertain older children and teens. Head over to a playground near you with a basketball field or a soccer field to keep everyone happy.

Other Features

Aside from the playground features, always scout for other features such as a dog park, drinking water, picnic tables, and shade. Too much sun can be dangerous and the lack of drinking water can make kids very cranky, especially during the hot summer months. Having a dog park nearby will let pet owners enjoy the playground too, while a shady area can provide some peace and quiet for those that need it.

Ways To Find The Best Playgrounds Near Me

Based on a survey amongst parents going to to playgrounds often, here is list of the best ways and their pros and cons on how to find the best playground near you.

Gowhee App Featured In

“Best Travel Apps and Sites Every Parent Needs”

Asking for Recommendations on a Local Parent Group

Parents’ groups are usually full of great information and advice. If you have the time and patience to go through all the recommendations, it can be a great source of playgrounds that you can go to. However, if you’re in a rush, it may not be the best option.

Pros: They are often made up of other moms or dads who may have personal experience with nearby playgrounds and can provide detailed information on their recommendations.

Cons: You may find yourself having to wait for another parent to respond or having to search through multiple groups before you find what you’re looking for. It is also often lacking pictures of the play structures or the community park to get a sense of the space.

Use A travel app designed for parents, like the Gowhee app

Gowhee is one of the top-rated travel apps designed specifically for parents. With this app, you can easily find local parents’ favorite playgrounds, worldwide just with a few taps, so it is a great tool if you want to save time or need to quickly find some parks and playgrounds to entertain the kids on the go.

Pros: The Gowhee app allows you to search for playgrounds in other countries and has translation features to read local parents’ reviews in many languages. It offers photos and detailed information like what age is appropriate, whether or not the playground is enclosed, or if there are picnic areas and shaded spots. You can also use it to search for other family-friendly places to plan a whole-day trip or vacation too, like restaurants, museums, and kid-friendly hikes.

Cons: When using a travel app like Gowhee, you will need to pay a small subscription in order to access the best features. But it is well worth the cost in order to access quality and reliable information.

Available on

Using Playground-Specific Apps

Playground apps are a good way to find playgrounds near you in a matter of minutes. They can also provide useful information about the playgrounds, like reviews and pictures, so you can make an informed decision. However, some apps are not as user-friendly and may lack information. Additionally, it can be challenging to plan a whole day with them since they only show playgrounds.

Pros: Playground apps can save you time and effort in finding playgrounds nearby. They list playgrounds in your area and allow you to quickly find the one that best meets your needs.

Cons: Unfortunately, these apps aren’t always user-friendly. Additionally, they don’t always provide the best information and aren’t great for planning a whole day trip since they often lack the detailed information you’ll want to make a comprehensive plan.

Join Gowhee and Enjoy

Use Google Maps

Google Maps is another good option if you want to find playgrounds near you. It is easy to use and you can sometimes find reviews of the playground. However, not all playgrounds appear on the map and it can be difficult to find playgrounds in foreign countries.

Pros: It is a free tool and since it is mainstream, most areas are populated.

Cons: It is not designed for parents so there is a lack of information. You may not know about things that are important for your family, like safety, cleanliness, and the age range.

No matter which approach you choose to find the best playgrounds near you, make sure you’re taking the appropriate measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for your kids. Taking the time to do the research will allow you to relax once onsite.

+ The Complete list of recommended websites and products to plan your vacation like a pro.

3 months before departure

1. Find kid-friendly destinations worldwide

The Gowhee app helps you find destinations loaded with places for kids. Each location is added by parents and reviewed by families around the world.
You can use the 30+ filters to narrow your searches, like hotels or Airbnbs offering cribs, with kitchen or laundry.

If you already know your destination, the app is also great to find things to do with kids while onsite. There are categories to help you search like Culture, zoos, kid-friendly hikes, etc…

PRO TIP: Gowhee App has a FREE 14 days trial, so download and try it here.

2. Compare and book flights and accommodations

Compare flights for different destinations and before booking the flight make sure the accommodations are in your budget as well. Sometimes a “flight deal” is becoming more expensive overall because of the high cost of living on site.

When traveling with kids, your traveling dates will most likely be during the high season. Here are 3 ways you can still save money while traveling at peak time:

  • Stay off the city centers and look in suburban accommodation
  • Book vacation rentals for 7 days or 30 days.
  • Use the Airbnb checkout page to compare your rate, including the cleaning fees, taxes, and services fees. These add up and your accommodation might end up more expensive than a local hotel.

PRO TIP: Make sure to look at the different times of year for your destination best weather and events happening. Sometimes “off-season” in one country is the peak in another.

3. Get insurance(s)

People often roll their eyes to travel insurances but they can save you a ton of money and frustration. It is especially true during the pandemic.

Facts about travel insurances:

  • Booking free cancellation tickets and refundable rates often bring the total cost to as much as your insurance premium.
  • Choose your insurance after booking your flight and accommodation. This way you can make sure the travel insurance covers the totality of your trip cost.
  • Many insurances accept Covid as a cancelation reason.
  • Your Health insurance might not cover you internationally, whereas some travel insurance plans will cover medical expenses abroad.

PRO TIP: Choose a plan that covers luggage loss/damages and car rental. This way you will have less to worry about during the trip.

4. Check for visa requirements and Covid regulation.

Some countries require a visa process and this can take up to 90 days in some cases.
So starting the process early is the best way to guarantee a smooth process.

Covid regulations vary between countries. Places like Chile, for instance, require a specific health passport that can take up to 4 weeks. So make sure to start that process as soon as you chose your destination.

PRO TIP: Double-check everyone’s passport expiration dates. Make three copies: one to give to a trusted friend/family, one to put in your luggage, and one to stay home.

The month before the trip

5. Order your gears, luggage, and other things you want to bring.

A month before your trip is a great time to start ordering all the items you may need for your vacation. Here are some staples:

  • High-quality luggage and backpack. Choose spinners, international sizes (>21” high), with expansion and discreet. The less luxurious, the safer it will be.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for all family members. Order these ahead of time, work them in, and exchange if needed.
  • Proper clothing for the weather at the destination. Think layers and lightweight.

PRO TIP: Use compression packing cubes for all your trips. It saves you a ton of space and allows the whole family to travel with carry-ons only. Even if your flight comes with free check-in bags, the frustration of losing your belongings, is not worth it.

6.  Start preparing children for the trip and create bucket lists.

Involving the kids in all your family trips preparation has many benefits. They are more patient during the travel journey because they know what’s coming. You can set expectations ahead of time and they get a chance to share what they want to do. It is also the perfect family bonding time.

Create your main itinerary before booking local transportations, attractions, and tour guides. For instance, if you are interested in visiting most cities during your trip, a car rental might not be necessary.

PRO TIP: Use the Gowhee App’s bucket list feature since it is easy for kids to save their favorite spots.

The Week before the trip

7. Wrap up work

Plan a trip … and all the problems should come. All the issues at work seem to happen right before you are leaving for your vacation. It is known!
Try to set expectations with your team and for yourself.

  • Create your vacation email message ahead of time. Even if the dates are a few days away, people will get notified that you are out of the office soon. They will set their expectations appropriately before you leave.
  • Bulk tasks by priority. Only wrap up projects that need to be completed before departure.

PRO TIP: If staying connected is a necessity, reserver a specific time/day during your vacation. But disable all notifications the rest of the time. Your team will know when to expect your feedback based on the time you set.

8. Laundry, packing and self-care

Giving a full week before departure is best to allow packing mishaps and doing all the necessary self-care (i.e hair).

  • The goal is to travel with 1 carry-on and 1 personal item per person. For this, there is a great memo technique for kids age 5+: “If you can’t carry it, don’t take it”.
  • If you are taking a road trip, make sure to do all the car checkups (i.e oil change, tire pressure, and cleaning), during that week. In case something needs to be done, you will still have time.

PRO TIP: If you are worried about jetlag, it is the perfect time to slowly ease into the new time zone. Start changing your eating/sleeping habits, a little every day.

The day before departure

9. Pack small bags and accessories.

Packing that personal item is as important (maybe even more important) than the rest of the luggage. Here are some essentials:

  • Pack Snacks! It can make or break your family travel journey.
  • Get new activities/ toys to spark their interest. Make sure they are appropriate for the plane/car.
  • Pack wet wipes and tissues for messes.
  • Get a travel first aid kit.
  • Pack a pen.

PRO TIP: Pack the equivalent of a whole day trip necessities in everyone’s backpack. This is a great fallback if luggage gets lost, spills happen or a potty incident occurs.

10. Set up for departure.

Travel planning is done, tickets, passports are packed and you can’t wait to get going. But before leaving, make sure you set everything up for departure at home!

  • Set all the smart home devices, security systems, lights, and timers. Make sure to test them before you leave.
  • If you live in colder weather, plan for the right amount of heat to keep plumbing and other things from breaking.
  • Charge all the electronic devices, empty photos, and videos folder (so you can capture amazing family photos)

PRO TIP: Download a couple of kid’s shows on your device and computer. In case something happens to one device you will have a backup! As a general rule, never rely on in-flight entertainment since sometimes they are not available or out of work.

15 Must-haves in your family winter vacation packing list

Taking a family ski trip is part of the dream, right? It is the dream unless you start suffering from the cold weather, hungry, and not prepared. So after carefully selecting your ski resort for this family vacation on the Gowhee app, you will wonder “what do I pack?”

Fear not, we have put together a series of must-have family winter vacation packing lists.

Apparel and Winter packing list

Of course, you may already have your basic items for a winter trip. But make sure you are equipped to stay warm while skiing and snow activities with proper water resistance.

1. Baselayers

Ideally, you have long sleeves underwear for them that’s specific to the temperatures you are skiing in on your trip. If that’s not an option, you can easily use leggings and regular cotton t-shirts. Linzey from the family fun tour explains: “my daughter has been skiing in 20-degree weather with leggings and t-shirts as her base layer and had an amazing time”.  Don’t forget to adapt the layers and clothing with age and level of physical activity.

2. Waterproof mittens or gloves

Once the hand touches snow without a proper glove or mitten it is immediately freezing and they are likely to freak out. If they want to play with snow, if they want to throw snowballs, and if they fall and use their hands to catch themselves, they need waterproof hand coverage.

3. Beanie with a liner

There are tons of really cute beanies (winter hats) out there, but cute isn’t enough. It needs to have a liner, otherwise, the cold air reaches right through to their head.

4. Bibs

These are the water overalls you see people wearing when they ski. The benefit is that it makes sure there is no chance of skin being bare between the jacket and pants. It also ensures no snow gets down their pants.

Not getting snow down their pants is vital to prevent painful frostbites. Be sure to put the suspenders on last, over all other layers (except the jacket) so that using the restroom is easy.

5. Ski goggles

The sun reflecting off of the snow is extremely bright so the goggles provide sun protection. They also protect the eyes from any snow, wind, and cold air.

6. Wool socks

Make sure kids have wool socks that are both warm and breathable. A misconception is to buy really thick socks to stay warm in snow boots. In fact, you want a pair of socks that will allow proper circulation and will not make their feet sweat. Here are our favorites.

Food and Drink for winter vacations

As a parent, you are probably well-versed in the snack department. Your ski trip is no exception.

Parent tip: To make the most out of the day on the slopes, try to stay away from heavy food and sugary snacks at the beginning of the day. Find accommodations with a kitchen in the room and plan for immune-boosting smoothies and food each day. This way kids will have more energy throughout the day and will not suffer from the sugar crash.

7. Snacks

An all-time favorite snack for the mountain is bars that are high in protein and healthy fat. Kids respond well to peanut butter and chocolate bars and parents like them because they’re not messy, they are healthy, filling and they taste amazing.

8. Water

It’s easy to get dehydrated on the mountain because you’re cold and don’t feel the need to drink water, but it’s still important so keep asking kids to drink to prevent feeling hill afterward. You could go with a traditional water bottle or opt for a smart way to get your water ratio on the slopes with a hiking backpack with a water pouch like these.

11. Hot Cocoa or Hot caffeine-free tea

Making plans for hot drinks in the après-ski is half the fun of the ski day. Back in your hotel room, plan a movie night with their favorite warm drink, popcorn, etc… It will boost their mood after their long day on the mountain or hill.

Let them know this is the plan; it will help keep them in good spirits and give them something to look forward to if they’re cold, tired, and frustrated.

10. Chocolate / Treats

Keep nuts for regular snacks but keep  M&M’s / treats in your back pocket (not literally) as a secret weapon. If the kids start to fall apart and need a boost, you can use these as a backup to lift their spirits.

Other Items for your winter vacation packing list.

11. Packing cubes

They will save space and money, especially if you traveling with a large family. Keep in mind that packing for a ski trip is different than a regular vacation. So use smart packing solutions for a hassle-free winter vacation.

12. Lift Pass

Visit your ski resort website and purchase your passes online. They’ll mail them to you! Make sure you get your picture uploaded ASAP, otherwise the process is delayed.

Upon arriving at your ski resort, you’ll see the line for passes and be thankful you were proactive. Make sure to keep your pass and the kids’ in a jacket pocket, for easy access.

13. Emergency Sewing kit

Nothing is more annoying than having to spend a lot of money on a new pair of snow pants a day before living. And it would be a shame to cut the trip short for a small dent into the waterproof attire.
Come prepared with a small sewing kit, to do some quick fixes to get you to the end of the trip.

14. Eco-friendly Hand Warmer

If you are concerned about kids being too cold, hand warmers are a great option. However, they are horrible for the environment so here is a great eco-friendly alternative for your next family winter vacation packing list.  Keep it charged in your pocket, if the kids get freezing cold, you can just have it ready to go. We recommend not using them unless they are complaining about the cold so it will last longer.

15. Bathing Suit

I know what you are thinking, it’s too cold! But keep in mind that a ski trip is more than a few hours on the slopes! Ski resorts often offer a heated pool, sauna, hot tub, etc… and after a long day in the cold, you will want to enjoy these perks.

Most importantly, keep the vibes positive and have fun! Did we miss something? Tell us below.
