#1 Feed the Kangaroos at Kangaroo Creek Farm in Kelowna, Canada

There is no need to fly to Australia or New Zealand to interact with kangaroos! You can simply travel to western Canada and visit Kangaroo Creek Farm in Kelowna, British Columbia. Located in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, Kangaroo Creek Farm is home to red kangaroos, common wallaroos, Bennett’s wallabies, and dama wallabies. When visiting, make sure to ask for a bag of popcorn to feed the kangaroos. They apparently LOVE popcorn just as much as we do!

#2 Watch Sea Turtles Hatch at Kosgoda Turtle Care Conservation Project in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a great place to see turtles. It’s one of their favorite places to live and, apparently, to have babies. There are 18 sea turtle hatcheries along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. While it may not be possible to touch the baby turtles, you’ll get to see a lot of them up close. The Kosgoda Turtle Care Conservation Project is the best place to go because of all of the different types of turtles hatching over there.

Best spring break destinations for families

Hopefully, you’re excited about Spring Break this year, though you may have gotten sucked into the worry that the school won’t take your kids back again this year like last year. If you’ve thought about Spring Break, you’ve probably spent some time deciding on where to go to beat the quarantines, stay away from the crowds, and feel like you are getting away! Here are five ideas of places you can go enjoy the break and come back refreshed.

Note: Make sure to double-check the daily updates for each country and states in the USA, make sure you factor time for your negative test, when you are coming back in the country!

@thefamilyfuntour trip to Costa Rica

To beat the crowd: The Florida Keys

If you have your heart set on Florida, remember that most families will have the same idea. Florida government officials are considering putting restrictions in place regarding the number of people on the beaches and in public spaces. So, think out of the box and explore the Florida Keys! Although they are not always promoted as a family vacation destination, the Keys have some amazing gems that will entertain both the kids and the adults, like the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory or the Siesta key with its wonderful kid-friendly beaches and a fun trolley experience.

Costa Rica

Another guaranteed warm getaway, Costa Rica’s hot dry season falls during the USA’s winter and early spring. The easiest and cheapest way to get to Costa Rica is through the San Jose International Airport. From this airport, you can take a shuttle either to Arenal to tour its volcano and see the rainforest, or to Manuel Antonio to experience the jungle beach vibes. In Manuel Antonio, you can visit the Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can see monkeys and sloths in their natural habitat along an amazing trail through the jungle. The trail ends at a gorgeous white-sand-and-blue-water beach.

Cancún is also for families!

If you’re open to going international, Mexico is always a great option to consider. Popular for its resorts and their all-inclusive packages, Cancún is a great option for basking in warmer temperatures and getting a break from cooking and cleaning. If all-inclusives aren’t your thing, there’s a great budget-friendly resort called Casa Maya. Casa Maya is very kid-friendly, with tons of kids’ activities, kid-friendly pools, and a mellow beach with shallow water. It also features easy access to excursions and has a couple of restaurants and a market on site.

Colorado Skiing: When they go warm, you go cold!

If you’re still craving cold, nothing beats winter sports and activities in Colorado! You can usually get really good deals on flights into Denver, which will give you access to a variety of ski areas located within only a couple of hours of the city: Vail is known for its European vibe and was constructed as a pedestrian-only village after its ski area was founded. Breckenridge is a very popular ski area with a really cute mountain town at the bottom of it with tons of restaurants and shopping.

From Denver, you also have access to Keystone, Copper Mountain, and the less-popular Ski Cooper, our favorite hidden gem. You can ski there for a fraction of the cost of the other ski resorts in the area. If you decide to ski at Ski Cooper, you can stay in the nearby town of Leadville, a historic mining town famous for its running and bike races. It is located an easy 15-minute drive away from the ski area.

Ski Cooper Mountain, Colordao

Don't forget to look closer to home!

Most families will stay nearby this year, but it doesn’t have to be boring!

Reintroduce travel to your kids slowly by doing small local getaways, like a trip to a museum, a good hike, etc.

Don’t forget to look around for a cute hotel near you for some great local resident discounts!

Finally, think outside the box and dig into your local community for some inspo, or check the Gowhee app! You may just discover new things to experience.

Tell us in the comments… Where are you going for spring break!

Are you starting to feel as overwhelmed as we are with Zoom conferences, the news story du jour, and binge-worthy melodramas? Then you’re ready for some serious unplugged time.
Get away from it all for the weekend and spend quality time in nature with the kids.

Now, let’s look at our 7 best nature accommodation picks around the world where you can unplug with your kids.

Centre de l'Hêtre, Lac-Beauport, QC, Canada

You may also like

At Centre de l’Hêtre, you’ll be sleeping in one of their yurts or domes, nestled perfectly in the peaceful environment of Lac-Beauport, a nature suburb of Quebec City.

All yurts and domes are equipped with a wood stove, 20L of drinking water and an odorless compost toilet a few steps away. Don’t worry! You can always use the regular toilet and shower located at the main building if you wish.
The Centre also offers:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation sessions
  • Thai massage
  • Outdoor fire pits
  • Lake access on Lac Poulin
  • Tons of kid-friendly hiking trails (or snowshoeing in the winter)

We definitely recommend staying in the domes (if you are a family of 4 or less). A third of the dome is glazed, which allows you to admire the natural world that surrounds you and to gaze upon the stars at night.

Just a few miles outside the West Yellowstone National Park entrance is this amazing glamping experience. Under Canvas offers safari-style tents for you and your family to sleep outdoors under the stars, with:

  • Fire pits and s’mores
  • Complimentary Camp Activities
  • USB battery packs
  • Private bathroom

You’ll definitely have a magical glamping experience staying at Under Canvas!

Note: There are a few other Under Canvas locations across the U.S. Be sure to check their website to see all the locations.

Auberge Nordique, Le Grand Bornand, FRANCE

Auberge Nordique is an all-inclusive resort in the heart of the Aravis Mountains in the French Alps. And its setting in the middle of the Aravis Valley is just secluded enough from the town of Le Grand Bornand that your family will easily unplug and relax.

The inn offers different themed stays in the summer and in the winter:

  • Relaxation & Wellness
  • Hiking
  • Skiing
  • Art & Nature
  • And more…

They also have a Children’s Club for the kids to explore nature with new friends. No need to think about planning daily activities and meals, because it’s all planned out for you and included in the cost.

Overlooking Lake Cocibolca and the Madera volcano, Finca Montania Sagrada is located on Ometepe island, in the rural village of Merida. It’s an excellent choice to disconnect in nature.

Each villa is placed far enough apart, amidst flowers and fruit gardens, to maximize privacy. During your stay, you’ll share the property with various animals, such as horses, dogs, cats and parrots.

The owners also organize guided horseback riding tours around the volcano. You can also hike to the top of the volcano, walk up to San Ramón Waterfall or rent kayaks to explore the lake. Be warned, Merida is a rural town where electricity can go down.

In other words, you might literally unplug!

Nothing can beat a night under the stars in the desert to unplug in nature, and the desert of Erg Chebbi, near Mergouza in Morocco, is a great place for it. Called “the gates of the Sahara”, Erg Chebbi has sand dunes that can reach up to 150 meters.

There are a few Sahara Desert camps in Erg Chebbi where you can experience a camel ride in the sand dunes and stay overnight in the desert. Once there, your family will enjoy the silence and the sky full of stars.

Without getting your expectations too high, it’ll likely be the prettiest night sky you’ve ever seen!

While you can directly book a night in a desert camp, we 100% recommend booking through a private tour operation. Most Morrocco tour operators include the camel ride and overnight stay in Erg Chebbi in their itinerary.

Hostels with kids? Yes, it’s totally possible to stay in a hostel with your kids, and the Mosquito Wilderness Hostel is the perfect choice for families.

Located along the famous Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies, 20 kilometers south of Lake Louise, this hostel has a private cabin you can rent for a family of up to  6 people, and includes:

  • Propane heating, lighting and refrigeration
  • A fully-equipped kitchen
  • Purified water

By staying at the Mosquito Creek Hostel, you’ll get to drive along Icefields Parkway and explore Banff and Jasper National Parks.

And after a long day of outdoor exploration, what’s better than coming back to a wood-burning sauna? Just make sure you call dibs early, so your partner is prepared to watch the kids for 30 minutes. 😉

Note: There are a few other wilderness hostels along the Icefields Parkway that can be good options, too, such as the Athabasca Falls HI Wilderness Hostel near Jasper.

Cedar Glen Lodge, Lake Tahoe, California, USA

The first things that spring to mind when thinking of California are palm trees and beaches. But California has so much more to offer for nature lovers, especially in Northern California.

Cedar Glen Lodge, located on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, is a great family-friendly resort offering cozy cottages with fireplaces and easy access to this beautiful lake.

Onsite, you’ll find a seasonally-heated pool, a hot tub, a sauna, fire-pits and activities for the kids, including:

  • Ping Pong
  • Volleyball
  • Putting green

Lake Tahoe is definitely an oasis for families looking to unplug for a few days.

Being an expat family simultaneously presents many benefits and challenges. Having a community is key and there are many ways to build one. Raising a child abroad can ultimately be a very rewarding experience as long as you utilize all the tools at your disposal.

Benefits

Benefits include immersing your children in a new culture and language, broadening their educational and career horizons, and instilling an appreciation of one’s own family roots and cultural heritage. Exposing your child to a different way of life, including being immersed in another culture and language for a long period of time, will instantly broaden your child’s worldview. It teaches them acceptance of differences as well as the appreciation of family roots and heritage.

It helps with “the grass is greener on the other side” syndrome. After living abroad, one can see more clearly that there are pros and cons to both life in their home country and life in their new country. Living abroad can open your eyes to the fact that there isn’t only one way of living, and that one is not necessarily better than the other, only different.

Challenges

Challenges for you as parents can include a lack of nearby family support (especially when it comes to childcare), the need to learn a new language and culture, and getting used to parenting in a foreign environment where local parenting customs may seem strange to you. Navigating life’s everyday challenges with the added stress of a language barrier, foreign parenting customs, and a foreign environment can be quite difficult to overcome. But certainly not impossible.

Raising a Bilingual Child

One of the first steps you and your children will take is learning the language of your new community. Sending your children to local schools in the community will allow them to learn the language and immerse themselves in the local culture. Bilingualism has been proven in a number of studies to boost brain power and academic skills and bilingual children tend to score higher in testing than their counterparts who speak only one language.

Your children will even be able to help you with learning the language as they become helpful interpreters for you. It’s a great bonding experience for you and your child. Their adaptability will also aid them in acclimating to new environments, such as when starting a new job in their future. Finally, their bilingualism and biculturalism grants them a greater diversity in career choices.

Creating a Community is Essential

To reap these benefits and help you overcome the challenges of acclimating to life in a foreign country, creating a community for yourself and your children is essential. A network of friends, which can include other expat families, can help you cope with homesickness and the lack of nearby family support. They can provide the support and connection you need both as an individual and as a parent to help solidify your roots in your new home. There are a number of good ways to help you find your community, including searching for local expat groups on Facebook, joining a local mommy-and-me group, checking with a nearby military base for an expat community and contacting your home country’s embassy for the many often overlooked resources they provide.

Try to create a community of both fellow expats AND families from your new country. Fellow expats can help you cope with homesickness by being able to commiserate with them over missing family back home and discussing similar frustrations you may feel about adapting to life abroad. This is a valuable connection to have for obvious reasons. But also having a connection to families from your new country is helpful because they can offer help in figuring out or clarifying things you might need to know that only a local might understand. They can help you adapt sometimes even faster by showing you how things work in your new country.

You can do it!

The challenges of expat family life can seem daunting at times, but as you get established and integrate into your new community, you will find help and resources so that both you and your children can not only succeed, but thrive, as an expat family living overseas.

In short, there are many tools available to help you and your children successfully transition into your new life as an expat family. Hopefully you can see that the benefits often outweigh the challenges as long as you take a little care of yourself and reach out to find your resources. Ultimately, community is key as well as not being afraid to dive into a culture that is not your own. Be brave and don’t give up. A life abroad can truly be a beautiful and worthwhile experience for you and your family. Showing your kids how to overcome the struggles you face while embracing a different culture is a gift unlike any other you can give to your children.
