A great place to swim with dolphins in the wild is in the waters off of Big Island, Hawaii, especially along the Kona Coast. The most common type of dolphins to spot in Hawaii are spinner dolphins. Some locations offer packages to swim with captive dolphins, but the best experience is a dolphin snorkeling tour, where you can see dolphins in their natural habitat, rather than in a pool.
Palo Verde National Park, home of the white-faced capuchin monkeys, is only an hour away from Liberia. The park is best visited on a boat cruise, where you can see the monkeys up close. They may even jump into the boat and climb on your head!
Yellowstone National Park in is the only place in the US where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. Hence why the 4,000+ bison herd is so famous. For a better chance of seeing the herd of bison wandering the park, try to wake up at dawn and drive to the Lamar or Hayden Valleys.

There are many places in Asia, especially in Thailand, where you can see elephants. But it’s important to do your due diligence and make sure the elephants are well-treated. The Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai is a great option, as it’s an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center. During your visit, you’ll learn more about these animals, but you may also be able to volunteer your time to help the elephants.
The Canadian Rockies are home to different types of bears. Bears can be seen in different places, but Jasper National Park in Alberta is definitely the place you’ll have the greatest chance of seeing a grizzly or a black bear. In Jasper National Park, bears are often seen near Pyramid Lake Road. There are also plenty of guided tours for wildlife watching.

Another guaranteed warm getaway, Costa Rica’s hot dry season falls during the USA’s winter and early spring. The easiest and cheapest way to get to Costa Rica is through the San Jose International Airport. From this airport, you can take a shuttle either to Arenal to tour its volcano and see the rainforest, or to Manuel Antonio to experience the jungle beach vibes. In Manuel Antonio, you can visit the Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can see monkeys and sloths in their natural habitat along an amazing trail through the jungle. The trail ends at a gorgeous white-sand-and-blue-water beach.
If you’re open to going international, Mexico is always a great option to consider. Popular for its resorts and their all-inclusive packages, Cancún is a great option for basking in warmer temperatures and getting a break from cooking and cleaning. If all-inclusives aren’t your thing, there’s a great budget-friendly resort called Casa Maya. Casa Maya is very kid-friendly, with tons of kids’ activities, kid-friendly pools, and a mellow beach with shallow water. It also features easy access to excursions and has a couple of restaurants and a market on site.

If you’re still craving cold, nothing beats winter sports and activities in Colorado! You can usually get really good deals on flights into Denver, which will give you access to a variety of ski areas located within only a couple of hours of the city: Vail is known for its European vibe and was constructed as a pedestrian-only village after its ski area was founded. Breckenridge is a very popular ski area with a really cute mountain town at the bottom of it with tons of restaurants and shopping.
From Denver, you also have access to Keystone, Copper Mountain, and the less-popular Ski Cooper, our favorite hidden gem. You can ski there for a fraction of the cost of the other ski resorts in the area. If you decide to ski at Ski Cooper, you can stay in the nearby town of Leadville, a historic mining town famous for its running and bike races. It is located an easy 15-minute drive away from the ski area.
Most families will stay nearby this year, but it doesn’t have to be boring!
Reintroduce travel to your kids slowly by doing small local getaways, like a trip to a museum, a good hike, etc.
